    Fun to assemble

Pretty cool little robot. I wish the servos were a bit more robust, but it functions ok.

    Potential malware

Does not come with battery. Also, the tutorial comes with a nice text file a pleasant hacker left staying they have the entire world edit access to the tutorial, which means it could have malate if another bot so pleasant hacker left something else. Disgusting product targeting children to potentially spread malware.

Acebott kits are fun and well-constructed, but they lack the unprotected 18650 batteries

Having put together a few Acebott kits in the past, this was a fun build – my daughter and I put it together to hack a little bit. She’s already familiar with Arduino and some hobby robot concepts, so this was pretty straight-forward. The downloadable instructions included source code that was easily imported into Arduino IDE and uploaded to the device. I left off one star because of the lack of batteries – while that was noted in the product page, it’s a significant inconvenience and additional cost. Fortunately, I had some around that I could repurpose, but it’s a miss for the new customer. The robot itself was fun to see in action and could be programmed with some amusing moves, though the servos aren’t up for much added strain – kids need to be aware that they shouldn’t force the arms and legs around, particularly while in operation.

I really want to like this but battery issues make it too difficult

This kit is very nicely designed. My son had a lot of fun putting it together. The instructions are a very long and detailed PDF that you download, which is a great choice compared to paper instructions as they can include so much detail. The problem is that they don’t include the 18650 button top rechargeable battery that you need. The listing doesn’t tell you that you need that specific battery, just that the battery isn’t included. I downloaded the manual and documentation and saw that I needed this battery, so I ordered it. When it came time to put it in, it was quite difficult to fit in and the plastic for the battery holder broke.I double checked that I bought the correct battery. I did, it is the 18650 in the button top variety that they specified (comes in flat top as well). This battery even fits in their other robot car just fine and that one is also supposed to take an 18650. I emailed the company (they were very responsive) and they asked what the dimensions of the battery were. I measured it with some calipers that I have and it’s just about 69mm. They said I need one that is 65mm.I did some more digging and there are protected and unprotected versions of the battery. I got the protected one (the manufacturer’s manual didn’t specify protected or unprotected). The protected ones are a few mm longer than unprotected. To the manufacturer’s credit, they did offer to send me a new one of the board that has the battery holder in it. The problem is that now I have to go out and buy yet another battery and my son has already put it together, so he would have to disassemble and reassemble it again. I currently have it working with some rubber bands around it, holding the broken piece in place. I think I’ll probably just keep it that way.The battery should really be included in this kit. If they don’t want to include it, they should very clearly mark on the product page, not just that you need a battery, but the specific type of battery you need. When a listing says “battery not included”, then I thinking AA or AAA batteries or something common like that. I’m not thinking it’s going to be battery 18650 in the button top variety and unprotected. And even when I looked up their documentation it didn’t tell me to get the unprotected version. Unless someone is already familiar with these batteries, they aren’t going to know that protected also means slightly bigger. and, even if they did, they aren’t going to know which one this is designed for. The whole thing is needlessly complicated. All of that being said, it is a nice quality kit, minus the battery issues. It says for 8 and up, but take that with a grain of salt. I got this one and the car kit for my 2 10 year old boys. They are both pretty technical minded and do lots of complicated Lego kits. They were able to do a lot of it by themselves, but some steps they just don’t have the hand strength to do at that age. Also, most kids will need help with the software side of it as well. Installing the various software and drivers on you computer and such. The program is a version of Scratch (a graphical programing tool). My kids already know how to use that, so that wasn’t a problem. If your kids don’t, it’s fairly easy and free to use Scratch online. If it weren’t for the battery issues, this would be a 5 star review. If you are willing to deal with that, or already have the batteries, then this kit would be a great choice. If not, I reluctantly can’t recommend it.

An amazing learning experience and intro to robotics!

This review is for the ACEBOTT Bionic Biped Coding Robot Kit.I’m not new to ACEBOTT as a brand, but this was my first exposure with one of their robotic toys. This product is an amazing project to introduce yourself to programming and robotics.Putting this little guy together was an extremely rewarding experience, and then programming and coding it was even more fun. Beyond the main present actions that this comes with, you can then design your own actions. The app has been fairly easy to use so far, and I really appreciate the extra content on ACEBOTT’s official website. The included masks are great, but you can even design your own masks if you are crafty. The only downside to this product is the constant reminder in the description that this product is intended for kids and teens, when many adults may have missed out on similar opportunities in their youth and could greatly benefit from something like this.

Good kit, but there are a couple items to look out for

I ordered this robot kit from Acebott for my 13-year-old, so he can get his feet wet in the world of robotics. I have other Acebott products and have generally been pleased with them. This robot has been fun for him to build, and the online instructions were clear enough for him to work through it on his own. I helped here and there along the way.The robot looks pretty cool and comes with various “masks” to decorate the face. Everything necessary to build the robot is included, and the parts are good quality. However, we did run into two issues: 1. When he went to test it, nothing would happen. I took a look and there wasn’t any power even though he had installed freshly charged batteries. After inspecting the batteries, I saw that he had grabbed a set that had flat ends. We swapped them from button-top ones, and that fixed this issue. 2. Even though he was now getting power, the robot still didn’t work. The motors would just hum. After trying a few things, I asked him if he had initialized the motors before installing them. He missed that part of the instructions, so we wrote some quick code (similar to the included Servo_90 example) to initialize the motors to the 90 degree position then reinstalled them. This time the robot worked just fine. It waddles across the floor.Overall, this is a nicely designed kit for a beginner, but they will probably need a little guidance.

It’s a difficult path to operation

The ACEBOTT Programmable Robotic Arm works adequately but has some deficiencies in design that may be problematic for some users. The batteries required for this device are unusual, not included, and not inexpensive. The instructions for assembly are not entirely easy to obtain and follow, and the installation of unvalidated code onto a computer to make this item work may be a nonstarter for some users. The removal of the protective paper from the acrylic parts was a somewhat more tedious process than I’d expected. Once these hurdles have been cleared, the device itself operates reasonably well, but the path to get to the point of operation may be more arduous than some users are willing to undertake.

    Poorly designed robot

First order came with bad servos. Replacement order came with bad servos. It’s very hard to see or say how the robot worked because I never had functioning servos. It’s an easy build. But the software load is horrible. Outdated computer software doesn’t load very well. Drivers don’t load. You’ll have to find you own driver to load the usb driven software. Overall it’s a poorly developed robot with poorly developed software instructions. You can follow their instructions until you’re blue in the face and not get anywhere. You have to know how to trouble shoot the software and figure out steps that they don’t include. Sent this robot back because of the bad servos and poor software technics.

    Unenjoyable and terrible

I’m an engineer. This was a terrible to assemble. The designers have clearly never heard of poka yoke. The instructions are not good. It requires installing sketchy Chinese code on your computer. It does not come with batteries (okay), and the batteries that it requires are super weird (horrible). I’m definitely feeling buyer’s remorse. Do not buy.
