Coding instructions too vague

This robot coding STEM kit has some pretty interesting projects. My son loves building coding kits, but this one got a little frustrating. It seems like the projects get more complex with each design. There are several different projects to build, and code in this kit. The first one he built was an “Intelligent Car”. It drove by itself, and would stop driving if it ran into something. However, the idea was to get the car to stop before it ran into anything. Coding the car to drive was simple, but then you have to code it to stop at a certain distance. The directions were not all that clear regarding how to do that. They ended up being more confusing than helpful. Even with my help, he couldn’t get the car to stop before it hit objects in front of it. The second project didn’t want to stay together, and the design kept getting more and more intricate. We had to take several breaks on that one due to pure frustration of the design. There are several other projects in this kit. Each one more complicated than the last. The one constant aspect of this kit is that programming the motor to perform the action it was meant to was the most complicated part, and half the time we just moved on to the next project instead of spending more time trying to figure it out. We followed the directions. They are mostly clear enough to understand, in regards to the building. But when it comes to the coding, it almost seemed like there was information we were expected to already know in order to code the robot with more than the initial action. The way it was written didn’t make sense to me. I tried coding the way the pictures showed, and they still didn’t work as they should have. This STEM kit is definitely something that can be worked on over time. So if you are looking for an activity for you and your child to work on together that will require completing over time then this might be the kit for you to try. This is definitely not something that can be started and completed all in the same night. As to whether I would recommend it or not, I am kind of on the fence about it. I guess it depends on how much time, effort, work, and skill you and your child are willing to put into this kind of project. You may need some basic coding knowledge as well.

Both “smart” sensors failed
My 5-year-old “Lego Expert” loved it till he tried building a “smart” truck. That is where we discovered that neither of the 2 included sensors works. Too bad, so we’re going back to Lego for quality.

This item has exceeded my expectations. So much more fun and value than the big “name brand” block building brand.The item came in a handy hard plastic storage box. Nice to keep everything together and organized for storage. Inside, there is an instruction manual that covers how the sensors work, the motor, and instructions to build many items/objects. However, you can also download the app – which has a ton of items to build, with step by step on screen instructions. It is impressive how many different items you can build with this one kit.The motor and sensor features are a lot of fun, and teach a lot of good logic skills. There are a few different sensor/setting options – controlled by the switches on the sensors and the motor. Hard to explain, but for example:If you have the infrared sensor installed, and have the switch set one way, the motor will go forward until an object is detected. If the same sensor is installed with the switch reversed, the motor will go reverse if a object is detected.In addition to the infrared sensor, there is a light (photovoltaic) sensor that can be used.The other cool thing is the gear and energy transfer systems. The assembly reminds me of a real car – including the driveshaft, gearing, etc.In summary, the item comes with one main “motor”. No matter what you build, you can attach the sensors to the motor. With a wide variety of pieces included, the kit allows you to build a number of objects – just not at once, as you have the single motor to work with.Great way to have fun and learn at the same time. Easy 5 stars.

A little tight to snap together, but still fun for kids
These were a little bit on the tough side to snap together, so adult help was definitely needed while the kids used them, but they were able to design their ideal robot and had fun helping to build it and watching it come to life. This is a great learning gift for children that are under 10, but the 10-year-old got bored with the toy fast and did not want to play with it after the first robot, but the 8-year-old could not wait to tear it apart and build a different one. So, you have to make sure you have the right age group before you order this to ensure maximum enjoyability out of the kit.
